Better doctors through better education.

Dr. House is an interactive seminar that connects medicine with the popular TV series. Together with a doctor, students watch a selected episode and then discuss the clinical cases, possible diagnoses and differential diagnosis. There is also room to spot medical inaccuracies and diagnostic mistakes in the show. It is an engaging way to sharpen clinical thinking and look at medicine from a slightly unusual angle.

The surgical suturing seminar lets students improve their practical skills in basic suturing techniques. Guided by more experienced students, participants can practise each technique repeatedly and become more confident with surgical materials and instruments. The seminar gives room for hands-on practice outside regular teaching and helps students develop skills important for their future clinical practice.

The venepuncture seminar focuses on learning and refining one of the basic practical skills every doctor uses daily. It helps students overcome their initial nerves about taking blood and become more confident doing it. Participants practise the technique on their classmates under supervision, following all rules of hygiene, safety and correct procedure.

The obstetrics seminar is a hands-on seminar mainly for midwifery students and students interested in obstetrics. Guided by a doctor, participants expand their theoretical knowledge and try out procedures and techniques used in obstetric practice. It is a space to gain new experience, refine practical skills and discuss situations students may face in a clinical setting.

The internal medicine seminar is one of our newer events and has quickly become popular. Guided by a doctor, students first learn the basics of physical examination and then put them into practice (e.g. auscultation of the heart and lungs). The seminar also covers recognising and interpreting selected pathological findings. It connects theory with hands-on practice and helps students develop clinical thinking and the ability to interpret normal and abnormal findings correctly.

The anaesthesiology seminar introduces students to the basics of anaesthesiology through a mix of theory and practice. Guided by a doctor, participants first learn the core principles and procedures and then apply them in hands-on training – for example, practising intubation and other basic procedures. The seminar is mainly for senior students and lets them get to know the specialty and broaden their practical clinical skills.

The urology seminar gives students a closer look at urology and lets them expand their knowledge beyond regular teaching. Guided by a doctor, participants first learn selected theoretical aspects of the specialty and then test them through practical demonstrations and training. It is a space to get to know urological practice, discuss and gain hands-on experience under expert supervision.

The laparoscopy seminar gives students a look into minimally invasive surgery and lets them learn its basic principles in practice. Guided by a doctor, participants practise handling laparoscopic instruments on simulators and develop the coordination and manual skills needed in surgery. Students get to try surgical procedures before they meet them in real clinical practice.

Breaking the Silence is a seminar on the basics of sign language and communicating with patients with hearing impairments. Led by a lecturer from the Association of the Deaf of Slovakia, students learn basic signs, words and phrases for healthcare settings that help them communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing patients. The seminar broadens future health professionals’ communication skills, raises awareness of communication barriers and supports empathetic, accessible and patient-centred care.

The histology seminar is mainly for first- and second-year students preparing for the oral exam on histology slides at the end of the semester. It is organised with the Institute of Histology, where students can revise the whole semester with extra explanations from the teachers in a friendly atmosphere.
